My all-time favorite musician to listen to on the road is Waylon Jennings. For me, nobody else has such a large catalog of songs which perfectly accompany road travel across the United States.
The following is a cover of one of my favorites by Waylon, “Waymore’s Blues,” as performed by Sturgill Simpson and his bad-ass band. I learned about Sturgill a few months before leaving on my long road trip across the western USA. Having more good country to listen to on my journey through outlaw country was essential.
Couldn’t you drive all day with this song on repeat? Not to mention, Sturgill Simpson appears to be the reincarnation of Waylon Jennings. If you are going on a road trip, take these guys with you.
Another all-time favorite band of mine while driving (really, they’re great for any occasion) is the Talking Heads. They have tons of songs about America, travel, and, of course, buildings & food. David Byrne’s quirky yet honest lyrics, and the upbeat rhythms of their songs will keep you going for hours on the road.
More about road tunes coming in future posts! Stay tuned, and keep your eyes on the road…
